Powerhouse VFX - Week 4 - Production under Hurricane Iran - Look Development
Due to the path of Hurricane Ian, SCAD closed all academic and administrative buildings in Savannah beginning Thursday, Sept. 29, with plans to reopen on Monday, Oct. 3. We are working from home, although the production has officially been postponed. I hope every one stay safe from the storm!
This week, I got our flower model from Emma, and I started working on the shading. Our team member, Thalia, was focusing on the vine creation. In the meanwhile, Hannah was fixing the overexposure issue of our plates. And James was helping us to rig the flower.
UV & Texture
I found the flower texture from Quixel, lined up UV to match the texture, and assigned and mixed materials in the material network. I assembled an HDR that shot in the filming location. To meet the Look Development Standards, I implement basic material quilt and reference spheres in the scene—rendered in Redshift.

R&D
To texture Plants and give our flower an organic look. I researched how to properly assign materials in Redshift to the correct node to have a realistic feeling. The opacity slot in the Redshift does not give the Opaque option like Arnold. The transparent shadows do not work well through the petals. I found a tip to use the Sprite node instead of the opacity channel, which also speeds up rendering.
